Donna Kaut was born and raised in Beaverlodge, a small northern Alberta community. In her early years, she spent many hours drawing, but it wasn’t until 1989 that she first received formal art instruction. Since then, she has taken various courses and went on to complete a Certificate of Visual Arts in 1998 at the Grande Prairie Regional College. Donna is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.
Donna has approached her oil paintings in a “natural realistic” style. For the last few years she has concentrated on creating colorful images of wild flowers and berries, most of which she finds close to her home on the banks of Bear Creek near Grande Prairie, Alberta.
From the beginning of Donna’s art career, she has shown her paintings in solo and group exhibitions, and has won numerous awards. One of her paintings, “Jewels of the Forest”, was awarded second place in the 1996 Capture the Beauty of the Peace Contest and was purchased by the 1997 Forest Capital of Canada Committee to be used for promotional purposes. In 1998 she won first place in the Capture the Beauty of the Peace Contest with her painting, “Prairie Crocus.” Part of first prize included having the painting made into limited edition prints, which were distributed to various non-profit organizations for fund-raising.
Donna’s painting, “Saskatoon Time” was awarded Jury’s Choice: Best New Artist of 2001(Flat Work) at the Calgary Stampede Western Art Auction. This award has launched her art career onto a new level, allowing her to join other artists in a world-class exhibition.
Donna says, “Painting is my way of appreciating and enjoying the beauty of creation. It is my hope that, while I have found relaxation and fulfillment in completing a painting, others will find enjoyment viewing it.”
As a full-time professional artist, she is now continuing her vision of bringing a small part of nature to life in her paintings: incorporating vivid color melded with the use of chiaroscuro (contrast of dark and light) to enhance their beauty on canvas. The images on some of her oil paintings have been used to make limited edition prints.
